What is Discipline? ';
';
Discipline is more than many people think it is!';
';
MANY PEOPLE THINK DISCIPLINE IS ONLY PUNISHMENT ';
';
When we discipline a child, often we are doing ';
something that lets the child know we are ';
displeased with something that happened and do ';
not want it to happen again. ';

';
DISCIPLINE IS MORE THAN PUNISHMENT! ';
';
Discipline has a positive side as well. ';
';
When a child is presented with a difficult task ';
or confronted with a real temptation, but sticks';
to the task or fails to give in to the tempta- ';
tion, we say the child has discipline. ';

What is Discipline? ';
';
DISCIPLINE IMPLIES THAT BEHAVIOR IS ';
UNDER CONTROL ';
';
When we Discipline a child, we are attempting to';
bring the child's behavior under control, either';
under @2 control or yours. When the child's ';
behavior is under control, the child can be ';
described as well disciplined. ';

';
What is Discipline? ';
';
When looking at discipline in this way, we are ';
faced with having to define when behavior is ';
under control and when it is not. ';
';
In general, we do that by defining the limits ';
of what is acceptable and what is not under the ';
circumstances. If the child keeps @2 behavior ';
within these limits, everything is okay. ';

What is Discipline? ';
';
To give the child a fair chance to learn what is';
acceptable under the circumstances and to have ';
an opportunity to keep behavior within these ';
limits we must: ';
';
Make clear what is acceptable. Help @1 under- ';
stand the context. Make sure that it is possi- ';
ble to do. And, give @1 a reason to do it. ';

What is Discipline? ';
';
We make clear to a child that some things ';
are acceptable and some things are not by: ';
';
TELLING THEM WHAT WE WANT OR EXPECT ';
and ';
SHOWING THEM THROUGH OUR EXAMPLE ';
';
Of the two, the force of example is the greater.';

';
What is Discipline? ';
';
We help a child to understand circumstances by: ';
';
Explaining what is happening and the difference ';
it makes in terms of what needs to be done. ';
';
By using what actually happened to the child as ';
an example to help @1 figure out what made ';
things go right or wrong. ';

';
What is Discipline? ';
';
We make sure that it is possible for a child to ';
keep @2 behavior within the limits by: ';
';
* Telling @1 what @3 is capable of. ';
* Avoiding placing @1 in a situation that ';
is more than can be handled. ';
* Helping @1 to draw on @1 strengths and ';
to avoid any personal weakness. ';

';
What is Discipline? ';
';
We provide a child with a reason to keep @2 ';
behavior within the limits by: ';
';
Providing @1 with good things (rewards) if ';
@2 behavior stays within the limits and by ';
providing unpleasant consequences when the ';
child's behavior goes outside of the limits ';
of what is acceptable. ';

';
What is Discipline? ';
';
Discipline is the ability to keep behavior under';
control. If behavior is under the control of ';
external forces, it is maintained by the rewards';
or punishments a child receives from others. ';
';
If the behavior is under the control of internal';
forces, the child is self-disciplined and guided';
by an inner sense of what is acceptable. ';
